The file named ﾒProTERM 1.2.SEAﾓ (a self-extracting archive generally referred to as an S E A) contains all of the ProTERM files needed for ProTERM 1.2. Double clicking opens the SEA, and when it opens, you are given an opportunity to select the destination drive and folder for the SEA to place the ProTERM folder. After selecting the destination folder, click on the Extract button. As the SEA will extracts the ProTERM files, they are all placed in a ProTERM folder at the chosen destination.
** Upgrading from ProTERM 1.0 **
If you are upgrading from ProTERM 1.0, do not mix old and new ProTERM files, keep ProTERM 1.2 and all of its support files in its original folder. Some ProTERM 1.2 file types are changed, are not compatible, and except for service connect files and text files, the files cannot be mixed with ProTERM 1.0 files. See details on this later in this document.
NOTE: All ProTERM files are placed within the ProTERM folder. ProTERM
does not place or ﾒhideﾓ other files in your system folder.
** When the Archive is Unpacked **
Locate and double-click on the new ProTERM folder (in the destination where you directed the archive to be extracted). When the folder opens, double-click the application program (diamond-shaped P-icon), to start ProTERM.
When ProTERM displays the ﾒPersonalizeﾓ window, enter your name and organization (if applicable). If you have purchased ProTERM Mac new, or have upgraded from ProTERM 1.0 by calling InTrec Technical support (602/992-1345) to get your new 1.2 serial and key number, enter your serial and key numbers in the appropriate fields. This applies to all single as well as site licence use. If you have not purchased ProTERM, you can use the software in a 30-day evaluation mode by leaving the serial and key number fields blank.
** Startup Problems **
If you have problems starting ProTERM, remove the file ﾒPT Style-3D 1201ﾓ from the PT Resources folder (drag it to the Extras folder). Restart ProTERM and see if that helps. The PT Style-3D file gives ProTERM its default 3D look. However, a few users have reported compatibility problems using PT Style-3D.
** Using the Help Menu **
While the ProTERM manual is the most complete source of documentation, the Help menu supplements the manual and provides enough information to start using ProTERM. The Help menu is located in the Apple menu, and contains several important files to assist you in learning how to use ProTERM. Many of the help files also include an automatic index to find information quickly.

As this and other help files are updated, they will be made available via the InTrec Web and FTP sites, and the InTrec BBS. Placing the new help files in the Help folder will make then available in the Help menu the next time ProTERM is started. The latest files will always be included in current versions of the software.

** Updating from ProTERM 1.0 **
NOTE: ProTERM 1.2 is complete and does not require any files from ProTERM 1.0.
Some ProTERM 1.0 files are NOT compatible with ProTERM 1.2.
* Service Connect Files *
To use your ProTERM 1.0 service connect files with ProTERM 1.2, drag the connect files from your ProTERM 1.0 Services folder to your ProTERM 1.2 Services folder.
* New Macro File Structure *
ProTERM 1.2 uses a different structure for its macro files, and 1.0 files are NOT COMPATIBLE with ProTERM 1.2. DO NOT COPY OVER YOUR RESIDENT MACROS file to version 1.2. Copy the macro elements from the old macro 1.0 Resident Macros files and paste them into the new 1.2 macros folder named ﾒResident User.ﾓ See the Read Me file in the Macros folder for details.
* New PT Resources Files *
DO NOT COPY FILES FROM:
THE 1.0 PT RESOURCES FOLDER
TO THE 1.2 PT RESOURCES FOLDER.
The old 1.0 preferences files cannot be used with ProTERM 1.2. Attempts to do so will almost certainly cause problems.
** Configuring Your Modem **
Choose Configure from the Connect menu. Most users need only to click on the Device pop-up window and select their modem (or one with similar characteristics) from the Device menu, and close the Configure window. If your configuration needs are more technical or require additional customization, make the additional changes before closing the Configure window.
** Creating a Service Description **
* Connect Files Defined *
ProTERM requires a description of a service to enable it to connect via modem or Telnet. Service descriptions, (connect files), are stored in service connect files, and the connect files are stored in the Connect folder. Connect files include all of the information needed to communicate with the service; telephone number (for modem dialup) or Internet address (for Telnet), the required terminal emulation, file transfer options, and more.
* Creating Connect Files *
To create a service description, choose Create from the Connect menu. When prompted for the ﾒconnect file name,ﾓ enter the name as you want the service to be listed in the Connect menu. The name is the first part of the serviceﾕs description, the phone number and emulation or duplex if needed are other parts of descriptions that can be changed to customize a description for a service.
* Dialup Service *
To access a service via dialup modem, enter the phone number of the service in the Phone Number field. Make sure the Method field is set to Default. Click on the ﾒradio buttonsﾓ at the top of the window, browse through the different pages of the window, and set the options appropriate for the service. When finished, you can either close the window or connect to the service by clicking the Connect button in the lower left corner.
The service you just created is now available in the Connect menu. The next time you wish to connect to the service, choose the service from the Connect menu (it will be listed under the name you used when you created it) and click the Connect button.
* Telnet Service *
To access a service via telnet, enter the Internet address of the service in the Phone Number field. Set the Method field to Telnet. Browse through the different pages of the window and set the options appropriate for the service (most services requires VT-100 or ANSI emulation). The speed and format fields are not used for telnet connections. When finished, you can either close the window or connect to the service by clicking the Connect button.
The service you just created is now available in the Connect menu. The next time you wish to connect to the service, choose the service from the Connect menu (it will be listed under the name you used when you created it) and click the Connect button.
** Folder Contents **
ProTERM uses several folders of related files in it normal operation. Some of these folders/files are required for operation, and others are optional. Here is a brief summary of the folders included with ProTERM:
* Help Folder *
The Help folder contains all the files displayed in the Apple > Help menu. You can add your own files to the Help menu by adding them to the Help folder.
* Extras Folder *
The Extras folder contains several sample files that demonstrate various uses of ProTERM. See the Reference to these files in the ProTERM manual. The Extras folder also contains a ﾒRead Meﾓ file with information about the other files in that folder.
* Macros Folder *
The Macros folder contains the startup and resident macro files and a ﾒRead Me Macrosﾓ file. It also contains files which demonstrate the use of DIRC macros (see the ProTERM manual Index:DIRC) and a folder named Contributed, which contains several contributed (cool stuff) sample macros that demonstrate the power and various uses and possibilities of ProTERM Macros the DIRC macro language.
* PT Resources Folder *
The PT Resources folder contains an Additions folder plus special files required by ProTERM. These files tell ProTERM how to control your modem and other communications hardware. If you prefer, the PT Resources folder can be moved to your System Folder or the System Preferences folder. NOTE: Never add non-ProTERM files to the PT Resources folder. Doing so may interfere with ProTERMﾕs ability to operate correctly.
* Services Folder *
The Services folder contains ﾒconnect filesﾓ which describe the services you use to connect to a service. When you create new service connect files by choosing the Create command, ProTERM adds the new connect file to this folder, and lists the name alphabetically in the Connect menu.
* Sessions *
When terminal session (scrollback) files are saved, they are saved to the Sessions folder. This default path name is set in:
Tools > Preferences > Files Auto Load/Save File Folders:

* Transfers Folder *
ProTERM defaults are set to saving downloaded files to the Transfer folder. These defaults can be changed by specifying a different folder in the Tools > Preferences > Folders window. The Transfers folder contains a file named ﾒTest Fileﾓ which can be used for practicing uploads.
